426.  St Francis Committees Discussion Meeting: Tuesday 21st February 2023

This was a very important meeting for all the parishioners of St Francis Church to attend. At this meeting the future committees of our Church were discussed.

Here are the minutes from the meeting.

Br. Francis opened with a prayer. Br. Jinson introduced the meeting and presented the need to boost various groups or committees.

Br. Jinson appealed for leaders to arrange readers for Sunday Masses then outlined the need for...
Eucharistic Ministers; Children’s Liturgy; Sacristans; Altar Servers; Music Group; Pass-keepers; Hospitality Team; Welcomers; Flower Arrangers; Cultural & Social Team; Evangelisation Team; Safeguarding; Church Maintenance; Media & Communication; Finance Committee; Parish Pastoral Council.

Anna shared events from the life of the Polish community...

• In January 2022 Br. Peter visited 200 households – 60 families. Every Sunday there are about 300 people attending Church. They started first Fridays with various devotions. On second Fridays they have Lectio Divina meetings at 6:30pm.
• Between February and March the community worked hard at Ukraine support. In March 20 people went away to Moel Famau for a retreat.
• In April there was an international Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Polish & English Mass).
• May saw 54 people going to Snowdon for a prayerful recreation day. 35 children made their first holy communion.
• In June Br Bernard came for a retreat and later Br Piotr.
• In September the children’s choir resumed their activity. They now number about 20. The adults also formed a choir of 10. On third Saturdays catechesis for first holy communion began.
• October had a special guest for mission collections. 13 started catechesis for the youth. There was an All Saints’ ball for the children.
• In November there was a formation meeting on the liturgy.
• In December there was a Christmas fayre.

Br. Jinson introduced two Jesus Youth representatives and thanked them for their generosity and witness at St. Francis. He also mentioned that confirmations would be at St. Francis this year.

Br. Jinson said that the parish finances have gone down considerably and sounded a note of warning.

He then opened the floor to comments.

• Michael asked about collections. Br. Jinson said that first collections would resume again at the offertory this coming Sunday.
• Br Jinson also mentioned the Church cleaners and the need to boost them. There is only one cleaning team at the moment.
• Philip said that he thought the worship of God and teaching were the two most important things in Church, then going out to proclaim the message.
• Michael asked if the roof above St John Plessington’s statue was still leaking. Br. Jinson said that it is but will be fixed before Easter.
• Ron said that the main issue facing us at St Francis is that we are lop-sided: the Poles celebrate what many British used to have. The British community has few children and families coming in to the 9:45am Mass. There are a lot of new people coming in especially from India and Africa – but we need something which makes the parish become the parish. We specially need a parish council. We need to be together.
• Br. Jinson said that he understood but that even with a different parish administrator we need the people to be involved. The brothers cannot do everything.
• Linda said how lucky she felt that we have such a wonderful choir and organist. She also brought a list of 20 hymns she liked as suggestions. Peter Cooke said that all the hymns we use are from the book. A short discussion emerged.
• Peter Bamford expressed concern about having another meeting after two months – it might lose momentum. Br. Francis agreed. He also told a story about his home parish in Bedford and the choir there and how good it is. Br. Jinson then suggested meeting in one month’s time. This was echoed by the floor.
• Marta said that much depends on the effort of the members of either the Polish speaking community and the English speaking community – so if everyone at the meeting contributes to one group, things will move forward.
• Br. Jim said that he felt we needed more than monthly meetings – especially we need a weekly meeting for a liturgy committee to prepare the next Sunday’s Mass. He said that this would enliven the parish in no time.
• Philip encouraged all of us to seek God’s will and expressed hope that this would unite us and result in the parish coming to life.

Br. Jinson closed the meeting by inviting Br. Jim to say the concluding prayer. He thanked everyone for coming and invited people to have some tea and coffee.

425.  Funeral Mass for Ag Scanlan: Tuesday 21st February 2023

Ag Scanlan was a devoted parishioner for many years. She was much loved by everyone and will be sadly missed. Her Funeral mass was at St. Francis Church on Tuesday 21st February at 1.15pm followed by cremation at Blacon cemetery.

Eternal Rest grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine on her. May she rest in Peace.  Amen.

424.  Diocesan Day for Chester Catechists
Saturday 4th February 2023

The Diocesan Day for Chester Catechists was on Saturday 4th February 2023 at St Columba’s Hall. The Diocesan Office for Catechesis, based down at St Clare’s, was laying on a day for all the catechists in all the Chester Parishes – Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Children’s Liturgy, Marriage Prep, RCIA, Bereavement, every type of catechetical activity we provide in our individual parishes.

The aim of the day was two-fold: for us to get to know each other and explore any ways in which we might share or collaborate; and, secondly, for the Diocesan Team to tell us what they have on offer by way of support and resources.

There was a collection at St Francis Church at all the Sunday masses on the 3rd and 4th December 2022 on behalf of the Caritas At Christmas 2022 appeal.

421.  A Guide to Plenary Indulgences
For the All Souls' "Octave"
1st - 8th November 2022

Visiting a Cemetery

An indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. The indulgence is plenary each day from 1st - 8th November; on other days of the year it is only a partial indulgence.

Visiting a Church on 2nd November 2022

A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who on the day dedicated to the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed [2nd November {as well as on the Sunday preceding or following, and on All Saints' Day}] piously visit a church. In visiting the church it is required that one Our Father and the Creed be recited.

Indulgence Requirements

To acquire a plenary indulgence it is necessary also to fulfill the following three conditions: sacramental Confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer for the intention of the Holy Father while being detached from sin. It is appropriate that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence.

The condition of praying for the intention of the Holy Father is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary. A plenary indulgence can be acquired only once in the course of the day.

420.  Annual Mass Attendance Count 2022

There was an annual mass count for four weeks as we do every year. The first count took place on the weekend of 17th and 18th September, with the second, third and fourth counts on the weekends of 24th and 25th September, 1st and 2nd of October and 8th and 9th of October.

The people taking the collection were asked to make a note of the numbers and inform the Parish Priest after Mass.

The Brothers were deeply saddened by the news of the Queen Elizabeth II passing. Their thoughts and prayers were with the Royal Family and the rest of the Country.

Pastoral Letter from Bishop Mark Davies: At a Time of National Mourning: Sunday 11th September 2022



Dear brothers and sisters,

I am writing to you this Sunday following the sad news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. With so many across the country and across the world, we share a sense of loss today of a Head of State and the Commonwealth who exemplified duty and public service. We have, indeed, been blessed to live in the reign of the Second Elizabeth and to have known such an example at the centre of our national life. The Queen’s tireless service across more than 70 years, was always sustained by her faith in Christ and her daily prayer. It was the promises she had made before God and a strong sense of her Christian vocation that was the foundation of her daily work in the affairs of State and Commonwealth, in building closer relationships with nations across the world and in the kindly words and encouragement she would offer to a countless number. We also cannot forget today her warm welcome to these shores of Saint John Paul II, the first Pope to visit our land, and of his successor Pope Benedict XVI.

I had written a longer Pastoral Letter for this Sunday to prepare for the Pilgrimage of the Relics of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes. This beautiful pilgrimage will continue in the week ahead at Shrewsbury and Chester as an invitation to prayer and as an encouragement in our Christian vocation. I have asked the clergy to make available in printed or electronic form, the words I wanted to share on the relics of the Saints and the witness of Saint Bernadette.

However, in this time of national mourning I am conscious of the expressions of grief and grateful remembrance which will mark the days ahead. People can sometimes be unsure today how to respond to death and to the sudden shock which comes with the loss of someone who has always been part of our lives. The faith that we share in Christ’s Cross and Resurrection leads us to pray for those who have died.

From the beginning, the Church has offered prayers for the dead, above all in the Eucharistic Sacrifice, that purified from every sin, they may come to the perfection of love and finally attain the beatific vision of God.i In this way our feelings of loss and grief are directed into this prayer filled with Christian hope. As the great bishop Saint John Chrysostom wrote some 1500 years before us, “Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.”

This must always be our final duty of charity to everyone we have known in this life, and this must surely be our final duty to Queen Elizabeth II, to pray that she may rest in peace. It for this reason, that we not merely commemorate our longest serving Monarch, but remember her in Christian prayer. In the same way, let us also remember the family who mourns Queen Elizabeth most as a mother and grandmother, our Royal Family. The world of modern media can often portray public figures merely as celebrities rather than as the people, the souls we must pray for.

It is slightly startling for all of us who have known the Queen throughout our lifetimes to hear the words “God save the King.” Yet, today I want us to keep in prayer King Charles III as he begins his reign and continues his mother’s life-long service. Our national anthem takes the form of a prayer and reminds us of the Apostle Paul’s guidance to the young bishop Timothy: “I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” ii

Let us use these days of national mourning and this time of the accession and eventually coronation of a new King, to remember all we should pray for both living and departed. May the soul of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II rest in peace. May her family and our nation find light and strength in the Christian faith she shared. And may our new King be granted strength and wisdom in all the ways he is called to serve.

The Catholic High School Open Day took place on Thursday 22nd September 6-8pm. They welcomed prospective Year 6's and their parents to join them at their wonderful school for a chance to explore the corridors and classrooms, meet the teachers, talk to their pupils, get to know their headteacher and take part in a host of fun activities too.

The relics of St Bernadette visited the Diocese of Shrewsbury as part of a national tour of Britain.

A section of bone from her thigh was taken to the major cathedrals and churches of the dioceses of England, Scotland and Wales in Autumn 2022.

It gave British Catholics the chance to make a personal pilgrimage to the French saint, to venerate her and to pray for her intercession.

The Rt Rev. Mark Davies, the Bishop of Shrewsbury, said: “I look forward to welcoming the relics of St Bernadette of Lourdes to this Shrewsbury Diocese. Many pilgrims have journeyed to Lourdes over the years to pray alongside St Bernadette – and now it seems Lourdes is coming to us by the visit of the relics. May the example and prayers of St Bernadette lead us in 2022 to renewed faith and love for the Holy Eucharist.”

Bishop Davies: St Bernadettes relics should serve as a ‘call to holiness’: Monday 5th September 2022



The visit of the relics of St Bernadette of Lourdes offers a moment of grace and new evangelisation in England, Scotland and Wales, the Bishop of Shrewsbury has said.

The Rt Rev. Mark Davies said he hoped the visit of the relics of the 19th century French visionary would invites pilgrims to answer the “universal call to holiness”.

In a podcast with Dr Gavin Ashenden, an associate editor of the Catholic Herald, Bishop Davies said the lives of saints like Bernadette remind people in every age of the crucial importance of embracing the good and of rejecting “what truly ails us, which is sin”.

He said recognition of the call to holiness “is going to be crucial to the experience of the pilgrimage of the relics in our own land”.

The call to holiness is the “crucial message of our time,” he said on the 16th episode of the Merely Catholic series for the Catholic Herald.

416.  RIP Brother Adrian Marsh OFMCap:
Sunday 31st July 2022  

Brother Adrian sadly passed away in the Countess of Chester Hospital on Sunday 31st July 2022.

He was received into St. Francis' Church at 4pm on Monday 15th August 2022. A Requiem Mass was held at 12 noon on Tuesday 16th August 2022 and was followed by interment at Pantasaph Cemetery. All were welcome to attend.

The Brothers would like to thank everyone for their kind expressions of sympathy following the death of Br. Adrian OFM.Cap and they would like to offer their appreciation to those who attended the reception into the Church on the Monday evening and also the Requiem Mass showing their support and respect for such a well-loved Brother.

415.  CAFOD Combined Efforts With The DEC To Launch The Afghanistan Crisis Appeal  



CAFOD (Catholic Agency For Overseas Development) combined efforts with the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) to launch the Afghanistan Crisis Appeal.

In Afghanistan, 8 million people are on the brink of famine because of drought, collapsing economy, food shortages, conflict, and COVID. CAFOD is supporting sister Caritas agencies to reach communities most in need with food, clean water, and fuel.

413.  Lourdes Overland by Jumbulance: Thursday 14th - Saturday 23rd July 2022

Chester Across Group went to Lourdes again from Thursday 14th - Saturday 23rd July 2022. Travel was overland by Jumbulance, literally a Jumbo-Ambulance.



£438 was raised by the Polish parishioners which is fantastic. Sincere thanks from Tony Murphy to all who contributed to the Jumbulance Trip.

412.  Vocations to the Permanent Diaconate in Shrewsbury Diocese: Sunday 26th June 2022

Are you thinking about becoming a permanent deacon or do you know someone who might be thinking about a vocation to the diaconate?

The Church is the pilgrim people of God and the programme of diaconal formation should itself be seen as a journey in faith. ‘The history of …every Christian vocation is the history of an inexplicable dialogue between God and human beings, between the love of God who calls and the freedom of individuals who respond lovingly to him.’ (Pope John Paul II, Pastores dabo vobis 36)

The diaconate formation team held a time of reflection for men who were thinking about the call to the ministry of service on Sunday 26th June 2022 at St Anne’s Church, Nantwich at 2pm. There was an opportunity to ask questions, to reflect and to pray for vocations to the permanent diaconate.

411.  Bishop of Shrewsbury Ordains Eight Deacons From Beda College in Rome: Wednesday 15th June 2022



Eight third years students from the Pontifical Beda College were ordained deacon in the Basilica of St Paul’s outside the Walls in Rome by Bishop Mark Davies of Shrewsbury, writes Josephine Siedlecka.

The new deacons are: Andrew Bishop from the Archdiocese of Southwark, Sean Henry from Shrewsbury, Shaun Doherty from Derry, Robert McMahon from Down and Conner, Gerard Moore from Killala, Paul Moores from Leeds, Wladimir Siwecki from Stockholm and Patrick van der Vorst from Westminster.

In his homily, Bishop Davies reminded the new deacons that their ordination called them to “a new intimacy with the Mystery of the Eucharist… For it is the light of this Sacrifice and Sacrament that we must learn to imitate Him who ‘….. came not to be served but to serve'” ….. He said: “As Saint John Paul II often reminded us, our vocation is found in the light of the Eucharist. And by returning to the Altar every day, we find the inexhaustible source of our life and ministry.” …. “By striving to give ourselves more and more – and this is the secret – we know a joy which never fades, a joy which grows greater with every passing year.”

Bishop Davies concluded: “Let us finally ask Our Lady then, in the consecration of her Immaculate Heart, to help us have a heart more and more like her Son’s, so in the words of the Prayer of Ordination you will always remain at the Altar “strong and steadfast in Christ.”

The Mass was attended by family and friends of the new deacons who travelled to Rome for the celebrations from several countries. After the service, a reception took place in the gardens of the college, under a glorious blue sky.

After the Easter 2022 break, we resumed meetings to discuss the ten questions given to us by Pope Francis. This meeting was in the Parish Hall on Thursday 26th May to 7:30 pm.

As a result of the last meeting we also talked about starting the Alpha Course in the Parish.

404.  Universal Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace: Ash Wednesday 2nd March 2022

Following the tragic events in the Ukraine, Pope Francis called for Ash Wednesday to be dedicated to be a universal day of prayer and fasting for peace. The tragedy unfolding in the Ukraine will be on the minds of all our people as they prepared for Lent and will join the Holy Father in asking the help of the prayers of Our Lady, Queen of Peace to “preserve the world from the madness of war.”

400.  Campaign Launched to Recognise HCPT Founder as a Saint: Monday 29th November 2021

A campaign has been launched to canonise a monk who dedicated his life to taking disabled people to Lourdes.

A Mass celebrated at Our Lady of Victories Church in Kensington, London, marked the formal establishment of a committee to promote the cause for sainthood of Brother Michael Strode, the founder of the Hosanna House and Children’s Pilgrimage Trust (HCPT).

A former doctor who eventually became a Cistercian monk of Caldey Abbey, Pembrokeshire, Wales, Brother Michael died on December 27th, 2019, at the age of 96 after spending 65 years organising pilgrimages to Lourdes for disabled people.

Those who knew him are convinced he is a saint.

399.  Pope makes ‘heartfelt appeal’ for solution to migrants crisis after deaths in English Channel: Monday 29th November 2021



Pope Francis has called for solutions to the European migrant crisis that recently cost the lives of 27 people in the English Channel.

The Holy Father used his Sunday Angelus to make a “heartfelt appeal” for an end to problems in France, Belarus and the Mediterranean, which, he said, had become “a tomb” for people trying to reach Europe.

He directed his comments “to those who can contribute to the resolution of these problems, in particular to the civil and military authorities, so that understanding and dialogue can finally prevail over every type of manipulation and direct the will and efforts towards solutions that respect the humanity of these people”.

Francis remarked upon how many migrants were vulnerable “even now, to very serious dangers, and how many lose their lives at our borders”!

The Pope said: “I feel pain upon hearing reports about the situation in which so many of them find themselves – those who died in the English Channel; on the borders of Belarus, many of whom are children, those who drown in the Mediterranean.

“[I feel] so much pain thinking about them,” Francis continued. “For those who are repatriated, to North Africa, captured by traffickers, who turn them into slaves, selling the women, torturing the men.

“For those who, also this week, tried to cross the Mediterranean looking for a land of well-being and found, instead, a tomb. And many others.”

A pregnant woman and three children were among the 27 people who drowned in the worst tragedy in the Channel since the migrant crisis.

397.  Police agree to review last rites role of priests following refusal of access to Sir David Amess: Sunday 10th November 2021




Police and the Catholic Church are to form a joint group to examine the role of priests in emergency situations following the denial of last rites to murdered Catholic MP Sir David Amess.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick have agreed to work together to establish the group to study the access given, or refused, to Catholic priests to scenes of traumatic violence.

In particular, the group will consider whether any changes are required to the guidance issued to officers faced with such situations.

The review follows an outcry at the refusal of officers to permit Fr Jeffrey Woolnough to pass through a police cordon and administer the final sacraments of the Church to Sir David after he was stabbed repeatedly at a constituency surgery in Essex on October 15.

Cardinal Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster and president of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, announced the formation of the group after greeting Commissioner Dick ahead of the Catholic Police Guild’s annual Requiem Mass at Westminster Cathedral.

The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Alan Williams of Brentwood – the diocese in which Sir David lived – who now serves as the Guild’s liaison to the bishops’ conference.

"As the Glasgow Conference begins, all of us are aware that it has the vital task of demonstrating to the entire international community whether there really exists a political will to devote – with honesty, responsibility and courage – greater human, financial and technological resources to mitigating the negative effects of climate change and assisting the poorer and more vulnerable nations most affected by it.

At the same time, we realize that this task has to be undertaken in the midst of a pandemic that for almost two years has devastated our human family. Covid-19 has brought immense tragedies in its wake, but it has also taught us that, if we are to succeed in overcoming the pandemic, there is no alternative: all of us must play a part in responding to this challenge. And that, as we know, calls for profound solidarity and fraternal cooperation between the world’s peoples.

Our post-pandemic world will necessarily be different from what it was before the pandemic. It is that world which we must now build, together, starting from the recognition of past mistakes.

Something similar could be said of our efforts to tackle the global problem of climate change. There is no alternative. We can achieve the goals set by the Paris Agreement only if we act in a coordinated and responsible way. Those goals are ambitious, and they can no longer be deferred. Today it is up to you to take the necessary decisions.

COP26 can and must offer an effective contribution to the conscientious construction of a future in which daily actions and economic and financial investments can genuinely protect the conditions that ensure a dignified and humane life for the men and women of today and tomorrow, on a “healthy” planet."

394.  Shrewsbury Cathedral Awarded Culture Fund Grant to Restore East Window: Thursday 28th October 2021



Shrewsbury Cathedral is one of the heritage sites across England to receive a boost of £35 million thanks to the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund.

Administered on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) by Historic England, 142 sites will receive support, bolstering local economies and supporting jobs across the country.

Money from the government’s £2 billion Culture Recovery Fund is intended to open up heritage and the benefits it brings to everyone, helping to level up and improve life and opportunities for people in places that need it most.

At Shrewsbury Cathedral this funding will be used to repair and restore the East Window and surrounding stonework. The window was installed in time for the opening of the Cathedral in 1856, and is by the renowned Hardman & Co. stained glass company.

It is the first thing visitors see as they enter Shrewsbury Cathedral, and is the impressive backdrop to its sanctuary.

393.  Church Planned Novena to Pope St John Paul II in Bid to Halt Bill for Assisted Suicide

Catholics throughout England and Wales were invited to pray a novena for the intercession of Pope St John Paul II as part of the attempt to help to defeat the new assisted suicide Bill.

The Bishops of England and Wales planned nine days of prayers to the saint after they saw that peers debated the Assisted Dying Bill of Baroness Meacher at Second Reading in the House of Lords on his feast day of October 22.

392.  Bishop Davies urged Catholics to fight harder to defeat Meacher Bill after BMA goes neutral - October 2021

The Bishop of Shrewsbury asked Catholics to renew their efforts to oppose the assisted suicide Bill after the doctors’ union dropped its opposition to the policy.

The Rt Rev. Mark Davies said the policy of neutrality adopted by the British Medical Association meant Catholics must be even clearer about why assisted suicide and euthanasia was wrong.

His comments came after the BMA adopted the new policy by a margin of four votes at its Annual Representative Meeting this week.

“The ambivalent position of assisted suicide adopted by members of the BMA must prompt us to be even clearer why the proposed change to the law constitutes a threat to some of the most vulnerable and also to the medical and caring professions which have long upheld the sanctity of human in treating patients,” said Bishop Davies.

“The voice of the BMA as a whole may have fallen silent on this moral question following the narrowest of votes. However, the voices of those concerned by the threat of euthanasia must now be raised.”

Sunday 16th October 2021



Cardinal Vincent Nichols has led tributes to Catholic MP Sir David Amess, murdered in a frenzied knife attack by a suspected terrorist while holding meetings in his constituency.

The Conservative MP for Southend West was one of the most prominent Catholic Members of the House of Commons and was highly respected on both sides of the chamber.

Following his murder in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, Cardinal Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, said: “I was shocked and saddened to learn of the killing of Sir David Amess MP while serving his constituents and country.

“I pray for the repose of his soul and for his family and constituents who grieve for him.

“David carried out his vocation as a Catholic in public life with generosity and integrity. He served in Parliament for four decades and was respected by all political parties across the House. His untimely death is a great loss.”

Sunday 3rd October 2021

Francis of Assisi is a saint whose appeal transcends denominational boundaries within Christianity, and indeed the boundaries between Christianity and other faiths. For over three centuries Franciscans have celebrated his 'Transitus', or passing from this life to the next, around sunset on the 3rd of October each year.

The Chester community of Capuchin Franciscan friars invited all who wished to join with them in a celebration of the Transitus at 6.00pm on Sunday 3rd October 2021 at St Francis Church, Chester.

386.  Anniversary Pilgrimage Walk for John Bradburne
Saturday 11th September 2021

On the 11th September 2021 Bishop Paul Swarbrick and the John Bradburne Memorial Trust walked up Cross Fell near Skirwith to mark the 42nd Anniversary of the death of John Bradburne. John was murdered on the 5th September 1979.

John had walked up Cross Fell many times as a young boy and is mentioned in his poetry many times, albeit Crossfell. The walk was led by the Bishop of Lancaster and the Bishop for Africa for the Bishops’ Conference, Paul Swarbrick. Prayers took place on the top of Cross Fell or in the Church of St Lawrence on our return to Kirkland.

We started the walk from Kirkland, parking in front of the Church, St Lawrence. Grid Ref: 645 325. The walk commenced promptly at 11.00 am. https://goo.gl/maps/ejujUQ2MMp7ciTVK7

The Walk was 8.28 Miles (13Km, 6 Hrs, 700m ascent. Cross Fell proudly holds the title as England’s highest point outside of the Lake District. Once on the top, on a clear day, the views of sea, valleys and fells are epic.

This was a fairly strenuous walk to the summit of Cross Fell and required a fairly good fitness level. Whilst joining in the walk was free of charge, we kindly requested a donation to JBMS.

Our Young Adults Programme was back with a new look...The Living Room a place to gather, grow and journey together in faith.

We re-introduced our programme for young adults with a new look but with the same friendship, fun and faith we have been enjoying since January. The Living Room was a space for young adults to gather, grow and journey together in faith and friendship. We invited young adults (10+) to join us on the last Thursday of each month from 7pm. We'll have discussions, questions, time to chat and just be together.

Most importantly there was space to connect with God in the midst of our busy lives.

If you fall into this age group, or know someone who does, please get in touch with us for details. The group currently meets virtually via Zoom but we hope that when circumstances allow, we will be able to meet in person! 379.  Celebration of the Feast of St John Plessington: Monday 19th July 2021

There was a celebration of the Feast of St John Plessington on Monday 19th July at 7:30pm in St Werburgh’s Church. Chester Catenians warmly invited their fellow parishioners in Chester to Mass celebrated by Fr Neil Robb with the sermon given by Fr Paul Shaw.

The Mass was preceded by short memorial service at 7:00 pm (led by Fr Neil Robb) in the public garden near the monument (150 yds from St Paul’s Boughton). After Mass you were invited to join us for Fellowship and a drink - Covid regulations permitting - at St Werburgh`s Parish Centre, Brook Street, Chester.

St John Plessington was educated by Jesuits at Scarisbrick Hall, at St Omer’s in France and at the College of St Alban in Spain where he was ordained on 25 March 1662. He returned to England in 1663 ministering to Catholics in the areas of Holywell and Cheshire. He was also tutor at Puddington Hall. He was arrested in Chester during the Popish Plot scare and imprisoned for two months before being hanged, drawn and quartered at Gallow’s Hill in Boughton on 19th July 1679.

378.  Bishops Thank Catholic Voters After Abortion On Demand Bid Fails: Tuesday 6th July 2021

The Bishops have thanked Catholic voters for their help in defeating an attempt to permit abortion on demand up to birth and to punish praying outside abortion clinics with up to two years in jail and an unlimited fine.

Amendments from Labour MPs to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill were withdrawn during a Report Stage debate in the House of Commons after it became clear that they would be defeated. Thousands of people had contacted their MPs to ask them to vote against the measures.

The Bishop of Shrewsbury has encouraged the people of his Diocese to raise their “prayers and voices” in defence of human life in the face of new attempts to legalise assisted suicide in England and Wales.

In a pastoral letter issued just days after the Assisted Dying Bill received its First Reading in the House of Lords, the Rt Rev. Mark Davies warned the faithful that the proposals would turn “care‑givers into life-takers”.

Sunday 16th May was World Communication Day. The theme for the 2021 World Day of Social Communications, chosen by Pope Francis, echoes the words of the Apostle Philip, recognising that authentic communication leads to 'encountering people as and where they are'.

Thank you for your generous donations to CAFOD’s Family Fast Day during Lent. We featured Marian and her son Svondo in Zimbabwe in Lent 2018. The community vegetable garden that your donations helped provide is growing well and during the pandemic the family has survived on the vegetables. Your support has also helped to provide soap and handwashing stations in the garden and in family homes. 370.  Bishop of Shrewsbury pays tribute to Prince Philip: Friday 9th April 2021

The Bishop of Shrewsbury has paid tribute to Prince Philip, who has died in Windsor Castle at the age of 99. The Rt Rev. Mark Davies issued a statement shortly after the Queen announced with “deep sorrow” that her husband of 73 years “passed away peacefully” on Friday morning.

“We were all deeply saddened to learn of the death of His Royal Highness, Prince Philip,” said Bishop Davies.

“We pray for the repose of Prince Philip’s soul and for Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family at this time of personal loss,” he said.

“We all share a sense of loss today, as the Duke of Edinburgh was for so long part of our national life and gave for us all an example of constant service and loyal duty for as long as many of us can remember. May he rest in peace.”

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, also paid tribute to the life and service of the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Cardinal said: “At this moment of sadness and loss I pray for the repose of the soul of Prince Philip, Her Majesty the Queen’s faithful and loyal husband.

“I pray for the Queen and all of the Royal Family,” said the Cardinal, the president of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

“How much we will miss Prince Philip’s presence and character, so full of life and vigour. He has been an example of steadfast loyalty and duty cheerfully given. May he rest in peace.”.

A new Brother joined our community, Brother Piotr Anusiewicz. He is from Poland. He has been serving in the Edinburgh diocese since 2014. In January he went back to India. At our request he came back for few months to serve at St. Francis. The provinces will decide how long he is able to stay with us.

Brat Jarek nie tylko pieknie i gorliwie mówil o milosci w kazaniach, ale równiez okazywal nam ja czynem i sluzba. Dziekujemy za usmiech, za wielka milosc do Jezusa ukrytgo w Eucharystii, który dzieki bratu nie jest juz dla nas tak ukryty. Dziekujemy za cierpliwosc i za poprowadzenie nas tak pieknie, ze rozkwitalismy w coraz gorliwszej milosci do Boga i blizniego. Niech w ojczyznie Pan Bóg poblogoslawi brata zdrowiem, sila i madroscia potrzebna do dalszej poslugi. No i wreszcie zyczymy bratu nieba... Bóg zaplac!

Farewell to Brother Jarek

Brother Jarek has served in our parish since 2011. It was a time of very intense work and service among parishioners. We are happy and thankful to God that our brother was there, supporting us and taking care of our spirituality here in exile. Brother Jarek not only spoke beautifully and zealously about love in his sermons, but also showed it to us in his deed and service. Thank you for the smile, for the great love for Jesus hidden in the Eucharist, who, thanks to his brother, is no longer so hidden from us. Thank you for your patience and for leading us so beautifully that we flourished in ever more zealous love for God and neighbour. May God bless my brother in his homeland with health, strength and wisdom for further ministry. And finally, my brother Heaven and God bless you!

Br Jarek Returned to Poland

I wished Br Jarek a safe journey back to Poland and on behalf of all the parishioners and friars of St Francis a big thank you for his 10 years of devoted service to the Parish and Chester community.

Brother Jarek Konopko of Smolany joined St Francis Church as our Parish Priest in 2011 and became our Guardian and Parish Priest in 2017. During this time he worked tirelessly for the parish earning our respect and leaving the legacy of a multi-cultural website for future generations of parishioners and vistors to Chester from all over the world. The website contains a photo gallery, tour of the Church and a library of the 367 events that took place during Br Jarek's time with us.

Thank you for all the lovely masses and the many other spiritual times we were together. You changed so many people's lives with your spirituality, loving care and friendship. We will never forget the Friday afternoons whilst you were praying in our Church and during adoration many people approached you for confession and just to be there to talk to. After which we had your wonderful Benedictions. We also remember your monthly 'Time For Jesus' as a special time of prayer. Thank you also for all the fun times we have spent together enjoying the social evenings with the good Polish food, music and dancing. You have truly been a good friend and will be greatly missed by us all.

The Statue of The Blessed Virgin Mary

This Re-dedication on March 29th 2020 is a both a personal promise of the people of our country, and a renewal of the entrustment vows made by King Richard II in 1381. On Sunday 29th March at 12noon, The Re-dedication took place throughout the country. As King Richard II once gave England as a gift to Our Lady, so we are invited to give ourselves, as the people of this country, to Mary.

362.  Altar Servers' Day: Saturday 7th March 2020

This day was a great event and one we looked forward to hosting. Saturday 7th March 2020, 10.30am till 3.00pm at St. John Henry Newman Church, Back Brook Place, Knutsford Rd, Warrington, WA4 1JE.

This event was open to all altar servers in the Diocese. The day had activities and reflections lead by the SYMT (Shrewsbury Youth Mission Team) which was streamed for different age groups. We also made sure there was a copious amount of tea and coffee for all adult helpers. The young people brought their own packed lunch.

This was a great day with the young (and not so young) people getting together and sharing their experiences.

361.  CAFOD Lent Family Fast Day: Friday 6th March 2020

The CAFOD Lent Family Fast Day was on Friday 6th March and was the 60th anniversary of the first Family Fast Day led by our founding mothers and, as it has been for sixty years, was an opportunity to reach out and support highly-skilled local experts around the world who help the poorest members of our global family. Family Fast Day envelopes were collected to help experts like Sister Consilia - a nun and trained pharmacist who treats people in rural Zimbabwe - continue their vital work.

360.  Funeral Mass for Mr George Martin Jones: Thursday 27th February 2020

We had the funeral Mass of the late Mr George Martin Jones on Thursday 27th February 2020 at 12.00 noon, followed by committal at Chester Crematorium at 1.20pm.

George was our faithful parishioner coming to 6.30 pm Masses on Saturdays as long as he could and the last few years he was living at Chester Lodge Nursing. His way of dealing with pain and difficulties of daily life was inspirational to all who visited him. He was a great example of real Christian life. Please remember him in your prayers.

358.  Annual Diocesan Mass to Celebrate Marriage: Saturday 8th February 2020

The Annual Diocesan Mass to Celebrate Marriage was celebrated by Bishop Mark at 12 noon in St Joseph’s Church, North Road, Birkenhead, CH42 7JY on Saturday, 8th February, 2020. All married couples and their families were welcome. There was refreshments afterwards in the Church Hall.

People were informed that if they were celebrating a significant anniversary (25th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th) and wished to attend the Mass, to let their Parish Priest know (by the 26th January) and they would receive a special letter of invitation. If you were not celebrating a significant anniversary, but still wanted to attend the Mass and enjoy the refreshments, contact the Bishop’s PA curia@dioceseofshrewsbury.org - 01743 290052, so that you could be added to the numbers for catering purposes.

The Department for Education wants to recruit as many Catholic teachers to its schools as possible, and is aware that across the Diocese there area number of Catholic teachers who are not currently or have never worked in a Catholic school. Sometimes making the transition back to Catholic education can be perceived as being difficult and therefore we would like to offer support to those teachers who are considering returning to the Catholic sector or would like more information on the appointment process in our schools. We held an informal session on Tuesday 14th January at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School, Capenhurst Lane, Ellesmere Port, CH65 7AQ from 6 – 7.30 pm. We had a Carol Concert on Sunday 29th December at 6.30pm. Malgorzata Hutek & Karol Makowski performed their repertoire (Carols of their own lyrics and music) and sang the traditional Polish and English Carols. Hustings for the General Election took place on Tuesday 3rd December 7.30pm at Queen’s Park High School, Queen's Park Rd, Chester, CH4 7AE.

345.  Day for Children's Liturgy Leaders: Saturday 23rd November 2019

A day for children's liturgy leaders was offered by the Diocesan Office for Liturgy in partnership with the Diocesan Mission for Catechetics. This took place on Saturday 23rd November at St Joseph’s Parish Centre, Birkenhead, CH42 7JY, and was open to all those who work with and support Children's Liturgy of the Word in our parishes.

Participants were asked to book their places with the Liturgy Office by emailing Anthony.Timothy@dioceseofshrewsbury.org They asked for a £5 contribution from each participant, parish will cover the cost. Participants were asked to bring a packed lunch, drinks were provided.

342.  The Funeral Arrangements for Bishop Brian Noble, our Emeritus Bishop

Tuesday 5th November:

Bishop Brian’s mortal remains were received into Shrewsbury Cathedral at 5.00pm with the Prayers of the Vigil and Reception. His body rested before the Altar until the Vigil Mass at 7.00pm.
His mortal remains were then transferred to rest overnight at Saint Joseph’s, Birkenhead.

Wednesday 6th November:

Bishop Brian’s mortal remains were transferred to the Church of Saint Michael and All Angels, Birkenhead at 10.00am where his body rested before the Altar until the Requiem Mass at 12.00 Noon His mortal remains were then laid to rest at Saint Winefride’s Churchyard, Neston at 2.00pm.

The Annual Diocesan Mass for Grandparents took place at 12 noon on Saturday 2nd November at St Alban’s, Mill Lane, Liscard, CH44 5UD. Families were brought to celebrate and give thanks for the part you play in the lives of your grandchildren. All priests were welcome to support grandparents in their parish by concelebrating. Afterwards there was refreshments. The nearest car parking was in the shopping precinct opposite the Parish Hall in St Alban’s Road, Liscard.

338.  Parenting Teens: Wednesday 16th October 2019

Another of the popular free courses for parents started at the High School. Youth Connect 5 began on Wednesday 16th October at 7pm in the High School. It aimed to help parents to help their children to develop strong emotional wellbeing and resilience. Like all our courses it was free to parents. The course ran over 5 weeks with a break for half term in the middle and was suitable for parents of children aged 8-18yrs.

337.  Day of Reflection and Healing: Saturday 5th October 2019

There was a 'Day of Reflection and Healing' for those affected by mental health issues and their families on Saturday 5th October. Bishop Richard Moth, who leads the ministry to those affected by mental health issues, lead a day of reflection and celebrated Mass with anointing of the sick at St Columba’s Church, Plas Newton, Chester CH2 1PL from 11am to 5pm. Tea and coffee were served from 10.30am and at lunchtime. People were asked to bring their own lunch.

336.  CAFOD Harvest Family Fast Day: Friday 4th October 2019



This year CAFOD's Harvest Fast Day took place on Friday 4th October 2019.

This Harvest we heard from 14-year-old Fabiano about the danger he faced on the long walk to collect water in the dark. Now that a solar powered pump has been installed in his village, Fabiano can get water safely, easily and have time and energy for school.

There are many more children who still need our help and who are risking their safety and missing school to get water. Help us this Harvest to reach more children and communities this Harvest!

327.  MISSIO Summer Mass: Saturday 29th June 2019

There was a MISSIO Summer Mass celebrated by Bishop Mark Davies and Fr Tony Chantry MHM with talks by Mill Hill Missionaries and Missio’s APF (Association for the Propagation of the Faith) on Saturday 29th June at 12 Noon. It was open to all and especially Red Box volunteers and supporters, the mass was held at the Church of St Michael & All Angels, Woodchurch, CH49 5LE.

It was an opportunity to meet fellow volunteers, discuss fundraising activities and enjoy refreshments in the adjacent primary school.

326.  Pause For Hope Service: Sunday 16th June 2019

On Sunday 16 June at 3pm Bishop Mark led the third Pause for Hope service held in Saint Columba's church in Chester (Plas Newton Lane CH2 1SA).

Pause for Hope is an ecumenical service offering all those affected by cancer a chance to come together in a spirit of prayer. It is an opportunity to pray for those living with cancer, for loved ones, carers, doctors, nurses and those scientists searching for a cure for cancer.

The service was open to everyone and included a reflection by Lynne Moorhead from the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. Following the time of prayer there were refreshments in the parish centre.

325.  Northern Catholic Conference: 7th - 9th June 2019

'Love One Another… as I have loved you!” (John 15:12)'

This request by Jesus was the theme of a wonderful weekend in Liverpool at the Northern Catholic Conference on 7th, 8th and 9th June 2019 at Liverpool HOPE University. There was a daily Holy Mass, Adoration and Devotions, an amazing healing service led by the Cor et Lumen Christi Community on Friday as well as great inspiring speakers, good food and fellowship.

322.  Lourdes Pilgrimage Group Leader Training: Saturday 11th May 2019

Mandatory training took place this year for all Lourdes Pilgrimage Group Leaders. To provide some context, a series of concerning behaviours and events during recent pilgrimages has led to the diocese requiring attendance at this training. There is now a requirements that all groups must have 3 Group Leaders and all 3 of these must attend a training session. Failure to attend will result in refusal of groups engaging with our pilgrimage this year.

317.  Thanks To Our Research Participants: April - May 2019

Adrianna Wyszynska is one of our parisioners and she updates the Polish page of our website on a weekly basis. She undertook a research project as part of her BSc Psychology degree at Glyndwr University in Wrexham and invited people to take part in a study.

Participants were requested who were aged 18 and over and practising Christians. Her research was trying to understand the relationship between people’s religiosity and their humility. In order to take part in this research people were asked to complete an online survey by completing a series of multiple choice questions relating to religiosity and humility. The survey took approximately 25 minutes to complete.

Further information about the study was available when people accessed the survey using an online link. The data collected was anonymous and kept confidential in accordance to General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Adrianna would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the survey and assist with the research for her dissertation.

315.  ACTS Day of Reflection: Saturday 13th April 2019

An 'Adult Catholics Together Spiritually' (ACTS) Day of Reflection took place on Saturday 13th April 2019 at Shrewsbury Cathedral. Open to all ages, the theme focused on the 'Divinity of Christ'.

Fr Tom Cunnah lead the day which started with Mass at 9.30am and finished at 3.30pm. 314.  Funeral Service for the Late John Hoyle: Monday 8th April 2019

We held a Funeral Service for the late John Hoyle on Monday 8th April at 10.00am in our Church. John being himself a Methodist was regularly coming to our church with his wife Ellen for the 9.45am Mass on Sunday and helped with collection. They also helped us to care for our little garden.

The Carmelite Monastery of The Annunciation invited people to The Solemn Profession Of Sister Maria Graziella of Jesus Crucified on Monday, March 25th at 11.00am.

Br Raymund’s body was received into Our Lady of the Angels Church, Erith at 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday 19th March. Requiem Mass was held at 10.00 a.m. on Wednesday 20th March. Funeral Mass and burial at 12 noon on Thursday 21st March in Pantasaph.

305.  Healing Mass: Saturday 2nd March 2019

The Carmelite Monastery of The Annunciation held a Healing Mass for all families that are affected by mental illness and those that work with them. The Healing Mass was at St Mary’s, King Street, Middlewich, CW10 9EB on Saturday 2nd March at 12.15 pm.

There was an Anointing of the Sick and soup and coffee and tea afterwards as well as an opportunity for socialising and meeting members of the Diocesan Mental Health Action Group.

304.  Vatican Meeting: Protection of Minors in the Church: 21st - 24th Feb 2019

Message from Cardinal Vincent Nichols Archbishop of Westminster dated Tuesday 19th Feb 2019:

Tomorrow, Wednesday, I travel to Rome to take part in the meeting called by Pope Francis to address the protection of minors within the Catholic Church worldwide in the light of the abuse suffered by them within the communities of the Church. I write to ask for your prayers and those of your people, for the positive outcome of this meeting and for all survivors of such abuse who will find these days particularly difficult as so much public attention is given to this reality. The broad themes of the meeting are those of responsibility - knowing what is to be done; accountability - the ways in which we are responsible to each other; and transparency - the determination that there are no hiding places in these matters.

These are the virtues, the qualities of our life together, that need to be renewed and strengthened. An excellent website provides detailed information about this event: www.pbc2019.org.

On Saturday evening there will be a Penitential Liturgy. I ask that at Mass on Saturday evening, you add a prayer or a comment uniting your parish to Pope Francis and all taking part in that liturgy so that together we ask the Lord's pardon for our failings. On Sunday morning, at 8.30 UK time, we will gather in Rome for the celebration of Holy Mass, seeking the Lord's blessings on the work accomplished and for the challenges ahead. 302.  Darwin and the Invisible Gardener: Monday 18th February 2019

Darwin and the Invisible Gardener: Perspectives on Science and Faith. Monday 18th February, 2019 at 19:00 at Shrewsbury Cathedral, Town Walls. A lecture on the impact of Darwin's work on beliefs about divine action, and how this impact shapes our understanding of science and faith today.

Fr Andrew Pinsent is Research Director of the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion at the University of Oxford. Formerly a particle physicist on the DELPHI experiment at CERN, he has degrees in philosophy and theology and a second doctorate in philosophy. The lecture was 45 minutes long with a 15 minute questions and answers session at the end. Refreshments were available at 8pm at the Orchard Cafe which is part of the Cathedral. Free entry

A prayerful reflection on "The Humanity of Christ" is the theme for the Day of Reflection for 'ACTS' ('Adult Catholics Together Spiritually') which was held on Sat 16 February 2019. 299.  Annual Diocesan Mass to Celebrate Marriage: Saturday 9th February 2019

The Annual Diocesan Mass to Celebrate Marriage was celebrated by Bishop Mark at 12 noon in St Columba’s Church, Plas Newton, Chester, CH2 1SA on Saturday 9th February 2019. All married couples and their families were welcome. There were refreshments afterwards in the Church Hall.

People were asked if they were celebrating a significant anniversary (25th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th) and wished to attend the Mass, to let their Parish Priest know (by the 27th January 2019) and they received a special letter of invitation.

295.  Catholic Teachers Meeting: Tuesday 15th January 2019

A Catholic Teacher But Not Teaching In A Catholic School? Your Diocese Needs You!

The Department for Education wanted to recruit as many Catholic teachers to its schools as possible, and was aware that across the Diocese there were a number of Catholic teachers who are not currently or have never worked in a Catholic school. Sometimes making the transition back to Catholic education can be perceived as being difficult and therefore we wanted to offer support to those teachers who are considering returning to the Catholic sector or would like more information on the appointment process in our schools.

We held an informal session on Tuesday 15th January 2019 at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School, Capenhurst Lane, Ellesmere Port, CH65 7AQ from 6 – 7.30 pm. The popular parenting course for those with teenage children was running again. The 6-week course started at 7pm on Wednesday 9th January at the Catholic High School. People who wanted to join other parents who want to broaden their skills, develop their relationship with their teenagers and negotiate the new freedoms and responsibilities our young people need, were invited to come along.

'I want to thank you all for your support and generosity which we the Brothers of the community in Chester can experience every day and specially when we celebrated Christmas as Parish community. 288.  NightFever: Friday 14th December 2018

Our third NightFever was held on Friday 14th December. We started with a Mass at 18:30 at St Francis’ Church Chester. Immediately followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The night concluded with Benediction at 21:30.

285.  November List Of The Dead: 2018

The November dead lists are available at the back of the Church. These will be placed under the altar during November and each day Mass will be offered for the Holy Souls.

An indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. The indulgence is plenary each day from the first to the eighth of November; on other days of the year it is partial.

To acquire a plenary indulgence it is necessary also to fulfil the following three conditions:

• 1. Sacramental Confession
• 2. Eucharistic Communion
• 3. Prayer for the Intention of the Holy Father.

The three conditions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the visit; it is, however, fitting that communion be received and the prayer for the intention of the Holy Father be said on the same day as the visit. The condition of praying for the intention of the Holy Father is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary. A plenary indulgence can be acquired only once in the course of the day.

The Diocese of Shrewsbury was seeking to employ a Diocesan Mission Catechist to assist with the organisation and provision of the formation of those working in all areas of parish and adult catechesis throughout the Diocese. The task is to involve seeking the renewal of catechetical formation, training new catechists and supporting parish catechists. This was a permanent contract based at the Curial Office although a part time job share would have been considered. From Wednesday 26th September to Sunday 4th November, you were invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life - 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. 271.  Kerala floods - SVP Appeal: September 2018

As seen in the media, terrible floods took place in Kerala in southern India. Hundreds of people were killed and many more were missing; countless homes were washed away, and the monsoon season was set to continue until early September. Kerala is the most Christian state in India – it has more churches than any other region. The leading Catholic volunteering charity, the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP), is very active there and they are doing great work helping the victims of the flood in local communities. However, they desperately need funds. Please contribute to the SVP’s Kerala appeal.

Adoremus, The Eucharistic Congress took place in Liverpool on 7th - 9th September 2018.

Our gratitude to all of you who supported Adoremus with your time, enthusiasm, presence and especially your prayers. About 10,000 Catholics were in Liverpool last weekend for three inspirational days which deepenedour understanding and relationship with the Eucharist and culminated in the Blessed Sacrament procession on Sunday. Donation: The cost was £265 per person, but we asked for a minimum of £185.
Group Leaders: Youth Leaders from Parishes were encouraged to attend with their young people, clergy too! We encouraged Parishes to sponsor their Leaders donation for the Camp. Clergy were FREE to attend!

268.  Poor Clares Hawarden: Tuesday 31st July 2018

The Poor Clares left Hawarden, after ninety years in this part of North Wales, to amalgamate with the Poor Clares Community in Nottingham. Many folk from the Chester Parishes found their way out to Hawarden in that time, and even more will have been on their Prayer List.

There was a Mass of Thanksgiving for the Sisters on Tuesday 31st July at 7.30 pm in St Werburgh’s Church, Grosvenor Park Road, Chester (CH1 1QJ). We were delighted that most of the sisters are able to join us for this Mass, and everyone was warmly welcome to come along, to thank them for all they have done for us and wish them God Speed for the next chapter of their Mission.

267.  The Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes: 26th July – 3rd August 2018



The year 2018 marks the 160th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady to Bernadette in Lourdes. The Diocesan Pilgrimage took place from 26th July - 3rd August overland and 27th July - 2nd August by air.

The Carmelite Monastery gave thanks to God for their 100 years foundation in Birkenhead. Holy Mass was celebrated on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel 16th July 2018 at 7.00pm Celebrant: Right Reverend Mark Davies Bishop of Shrewsbury warmly invited everyone to come and be with us in thanking Almighty God for this Foundation in honour of Our Blessed Lady. 261.  NightFever: Friday 15th June 2018

On Friday 15th June we launched a ‘NightFever’ programme in St Francis’ Church Chester. We started with Mass at 7pm. Adoration began at 8pm running through until 10:30pm. NightFever is a fairly new idea and requires a small team of willing volunteers to go out into busy town/city centres inviting passers-by to come into church to light a candle and experience Adoration. There is also the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of reconciliation.

NightFever is hugely successful across Europe and the USA. People were asked to come along to Mass and spend some time in prayer during adoration after. For further information please contact Anthony Hunt (Chaplain at Chester Catholic High School) on 07714 160 268.

Message from Anne Rogowski; To all members of the Shrewsbury Lourdes Hospitality At the last AGM we voted to begin a working party to look at our constitution and ensure that it is fit for purpose for the future. We have met a couple of times and have come up with some draft proposals. We will meet again at St Mary of the Angels, Hooton on Saturday, 12th May at 1.30pm. 256.  The Rambling Group: Wednesday 2nd May 2018

The rambling group started its series of summer evening rambles on Wednesday 2nd May. These are gentle walks lasting no more than two hours, with a refreshing drink at a convenient hostelry afterwards for those in need. Ideal for first-time ramblers! The rambles will normally take place on the first Wednesday of each month until September. Routes will be decided beforehand according to weather conditions. 255.  Parents Association Dance Night: Friday 27th April 2018

Each year we hold a Parents Association Dance Night at the Catholic High School, hosted by our Parents Association and featuring our school swing band, The City Jazz Orchestra and Singers. The event raises money for the Parents Association and is always great fun. There is no charge for tickets, but a donation was requested on the door. There was be a raffle and a bar. The PA Dance Night was on Friday 27th April, doors opened at 7.30 - band was on stage from 8pm.

254.  Healing Mass: Saturday 21st April 2018

A Healing Mass for all families that are affected by mental illness and those that work with them. The mass was held at St James’, 40, Underwood Road, Hattersley, Hyde, SK14 3DH on Saturday 21st April at 12 Noon. There was an Anointing of the Sick during the Mass and an opportunity for socialising and meeting members of the Diocesan Mental Health Action Group afterwards.

SPUC Pro-Life Chain: This annual demonstration was held on Hoole Road by Canadian Avenue on Saturday, 21 April, from 11am to 12.30pm. We were holding placards with Pro-Life messages for passing motorists to see, whilst we stood in silence on the kerbside. Please pray for the success of this demonstration and peopel were invited to join.

251.  'ACTS' Day of Reflection: Saturday 21st April 2018

Work and Love - the big things in our lives" was the theme for the Day of Reflection for 'ACTS' ('Adult Catholics Together Spiritually') held on Sat 21st April 2018. If you are aged between 18 - 35 you were invited to join us when we were led by Canon Brendan Hoban. The day started at 9.30pm at Wistaston Hall, Crewe CW2 8JS and finished around 5pm.

250.  Shrewsbury Youth Mission Team: Sunday 8th April 2018

Dave Burke from the Shrewsbury Youth Mission Team introduced the work of the team at our Sunday masses. He explained their vision to encourage, empower and equip the young people, and youth leaders of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.

They continually plan an exciting calendar of events, from regional evenings of music and games, to larger national events like Lourdes, Flame and World Youth Day. This is as well as providing on the ground support of Confirmation Retreat Days, Youth Leaders Training Courses, workshops and training within Schools and much much more!

Symposium on The Eucharist – Saturday 3rd March 2018, St Ambrose College Hale Barns and Sunday 4th March 2018, Parish Room, Shrewsbury Cathedral.

As part of the diocese's preparations for the Eucharistic Congress in Liverpool this September, the subject for the day was The Eucharist, Maelstrom of Love: Source and Centre of the Sacramental Life. This is the title of a study written by the speaker, Fr Oliver Treanor of the diocese of Down and Connor. 'Come on in...' is the theme for this year's 'Fairtrade Fortnight' from Monday 26th February - Sunday 11th March, and is an open invitation to us all to learn more about how trading fairly with farmers and producers around the world has helped them, and their communities, to earn their way out of poverty.

Br Jarek said: 'I want to thank you all for your support and generosity which we the Brothers of the community in Chester can experience every day and specially when we celebrated Christmas as Parish community and it was a very well attended celebration. The Saturday walks programme continued on Saturday 9th December. Walks usually take place on the first Saturday of each month. Our aim over the autumn was to walk the Bishop Bennet Way in sections. The Diocesan Lourdes Hospitality Group celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with Mass at 7.30pm on Friday 8th December at St Chad’s, Stockport Road, Cheadle SK8 2AF followed by a social gathering in St Chad’s Parish Centre. Everybody was welcome.

Mass was preceded at 6.30pm with a meeting for Hospitality members interested in joining a working party discussed the constitution and work of the group, following on from an agenda item at the AGM last September.

230.  World Gifts Coffee Morning: Tuesday 28th November

Chester CAFOD Support Group invited us to join them for their World Gifts Coffee Morning on Tuesday 28 November. Any time between 10.30am - 12.30pm. They asked us to call in to enjoy a coffee and goodies, friendly company and the opportunity to buy from a great selection of world gifts including for the first time a solar powered lamp and a birth certificate.

Once again their venue for this event was No 71 Liverpool Road. Heading out of Chester this is on the left hand side just after Abbots Park and before the Bache roundabout.

Our latest Parish Social Evening took place on Sunday 26th November 2017 at 6.30pm in the Parish Hall. There was great food, good music and it was an excellent opportunity to meet other parishioners and have some fun together.

It was a very successful event. We raised £303.20 for our Parish Budget. Thanks to all those who organised it and those who came to the social.

224.  Pilgrimage to the Holy Land: 23rd – 30th October 2017



This will take place from 23rd -30th October. We were based in Jerusalem and Galilee and visited all the main places associated with Jesus’ life and ministry. We linked up with the Youth Pilgrimage for Mass and liturgies. Our theme this year in our Diocesan Year for Mission was: 'Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord'. The cost of the Pilgrimage, which includes direct flights from Manchester, half‑board accommodation, all coaches and sightseeing was £1,575. 223.  Youth Pilgrimage to the Holy Land: 22nd – 29th October 2017



This took place from the 22nd - 29th October and was based in Bethlehem and Galilee. We walked together in the footsteps of the Lord but there was the opportunity to meet with young Christians from the Holy Land in schools and universities and to discover from them what it is like to be a young Christian in Palestine today. Thanks to the generosity of various donors we were able to offer this Pilgrimage at £895. It was requested that we encourage young people from your parish between the age of 16 & 25 to join the Pilgrimage. 222.  Annual Mass Attendance Count 2017

221.  Commission for Marriage and Family Life, Educating Children in Sexuality: 24th October 2017

By far the best people to educate children in sexual matters are their parents, while one-size-fits-all lessons in primary school can embarrass the young and be harmful. Mrs Louise Kirk of the Diocesan Marriage & Family Life Commission wrote her book Sexuality Explained: a guide for parents and children to help. She reviewed the current pitfalls of leaving sex education to teachers and outlined ways in which parents can do more for their children. 8pm on Tuesday, 24th October, at St Alban’s Church Hall, Macclesfield, SK11 8DJ.

220.  'Exploring our Catholic Faith through the Arts': 20th – 22nd October 2017

The ACTS' (Adult Catholics Together Spiritually) annual retreat took place from Fri 20th Oct (pm) until after lunch Sun 22nd Oct 2017. If you were aged between 20 – 35 you were very welcome to attend.

Everyone was warmly invited to the Annual Diocesan Mass celebrating the important vocation of Grandparents in the life of the family, and of the Church.

The Mass was celebrated at St Columba’s, Plas Newton Lane, Plas Newton, Chester CH2 1SA on Saturday 14 October at 11am followed by light refreshments. Please keep the vocation of grandparents in your prayers, they are often essential in assisting parents with childcare and passing on the beauty of the Catholic Faith to their grandchildren.

218.  Catholic Certificate of Religious Studies: Sat 16th Sept and 7th Oct 2017

The National Certificate is aimed at teachers teaching in Catholic Schools and for anyone interested in developing more understanding of our Catholic Faith started with the Old Testament module on Saturday 16 September and 7 October. 216.  The Transitus of St Francis: Tuesday 3rd Oct 2017

Francis of Assisi is a saint whose appeal transcends denominational boundaries within Christianity, and indeed the boundaries between Christianity and other faiths. For over three centuries Franciscans have celebrated his 'Transitus', or passing from this life to the next, around sunset on the 3rd of October each year. The service combines Evening Prayer I for the Feast of St Francis with a reading of the account of Francis’s final days from the First Life by Brother Thomas of Celano.

The Chester community of Capuchin Franciscan friars and the Chester fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order invited all who wish to join with them and with local Anglican Franciscans in a celebration of the Transitus on October 3rd at 7 p.m. in St Anselm’s Chapel, Chester Cathedral.

In September 2017 our Capuchin Province of Great Britain had a Provincial Chapter. During this time we talked about important topics of our Capuchin life and elected the Provincial Minister and his Council. We have elected: Br James Boner as our Provincial Minister and Brs Charles Serignat, Martin Mikuskiewicz, Michael Hargan, Lucjan Zaniewski as his Councillors.

212.  Lourdes by Jumbulance: August/September 2017

The Chester Across Group pilgrimage to Lourdes by Jumbulance took place from Thursday 31st August to Saturday 9th September. We traveled overland and the Jumbulance has seven beds on it so we could care for some very sick or disabled pilgrims, especially those who cannot fly.

There were vacancies for a Doctor and/or nurse; two helpers and two sick or disabled people. The cost of £800 included Travel Insurance which many poorly people would not be able to get to go abroad. Chester CAFOD Support Group invited all supporters and interested parishioners to join them for a special Mass offered for the work of CAFOD on Tuesday 27 June at 7pm at St Clare's, 27 Downsfield Road, Chester, CH4 7LG.

After Mass there was refreshments in the Parish Room and an opportunity to find out more about the work and priorities of both CAFOD and the local support Group.

208.  Visit of Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima: Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May 2017



'2017 is the centenary of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima. To mark the centenary that National Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima is visiting the Cathedrals of England and Wales, accompanied by the relics of Blessed Jacinta and Blessed Francisco.

The statue was at our Cathedral on the weekend of the 20th and 21st of May (please click on the poster to open it full size in a new window) and we looked forward to welcoming you as pilgrims.'

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children held their Annual Pro-Life demonstration on Hoole Road on Saturday 29th April from 11am to 12.30pm. They held placards with Pro-Life messages, for passing motorists to see, while standing in silence on the kerbside. Prayers were requested for the success of this demonstration.

194.  The Gift of Human Sexuality and the implications of Transgenderism, by Mrs Gabriele Kuby: Tuesday 21st March 2017

The Diocese of Shrewsbury was pleased to announce the visit of Gabriele Kuby, the author of the best-selling book, The Global Sexual Revolution: Destruction of Freedom in the Name of Freedom.

A German writer and sociologist, Mrs Kuby addressed the controversial subject of “Ideology of Gender” at a conference for the laity entitled “Man or Woman – A Matter of Choice”.

The event took place at St Christopher’s Church Hall in Romiley, Cheshire, from 7pm to 9pm on Tuesday March 21. Mrs Kuby also addressed the clergy and educationalists of the Diocese of Shrewsbury on “The Gift of Human Sexuality” at meetings which were not open to the wider public.

The event of March 21st was a conference for the laity. It was open to the public without charge but people wishing to attend were required to register in advance. A Recovery of Mercy: the radical experience of Grace through all our addictions" was the theme for the Day of Reflection for 'ACTS' ('Adult Catholics Together Spiritually') held on Sat 11 March 2017. 190.  Flame III: 10,000 Reasons: Saturday 11th March 2017

Bishop Mark invited young people from the Diocese to join him at Flame 3:10,000 Reasons in Wembley on Saturday 11th March 2017. This huge national youth event was organised by the Catholic Youth Ministry Federation. It built on the success of Flame and Flame II.

The 2017 SPUC Youth Conference took place from 3rd – 5th March 2017 at Yarnfield Park Conference Centre in Stone. The purpose of this conference was to equip young people aged 16-35 with the knowledge needed to defend life and the family.

This year the Mass for Marriage and Family Life was celebrated at Noon on Saturday 11th February at Our Lady and the Apostles, Shaw Heath, Stockport SK3 8BQ with Bishop Mark Davies presiding.

All married couples and families were welcome but if you were a couple celebrating a significant wedding anniversary (silver, ruby, golden or platinum) and attended, you could have let your Parish Priest know by the 2nd of February and he would have arranged for a special invitation to be sent you on behalf of the Bishop.

179.  Peter Winder Funeral Mass: Wednesday 7th December 2016

Our faithful parishioner Peter Winder died on 19th November 2016 at Kingscourt Nursing Home Chester aged 97 Years. Peter was an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist for over 40 years and he was one of the most involved persons in the parish ministries through all his life.

His Funeral Mass took place on Wednesday 7th December at 12 Noon followed by cremation at 1.20pm at Blacon Crematorium. Eternal rest grant onto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace, Amen.

176.  The Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford: Finance Manager: Saturday 21st November 2016

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford covers parts of the geographic areas of Greater Manchester and Lancashire where it supports the spiritual and pastoral work of the Catholic Church and work for social welfare in 150 parishes.

The Diocese also supports over 200 Catholic schools, provides pastoral support and chaplaincy provision for local hospitals, police and universities and works to protect, encourage and support diverse groups including the young and those most vulnerable in society. This is in addition to operating various other services including our diocesan bookshop and a network of parish centres and clubs. Our central services, based at the Cathedral Centre in Salford, work to support and assist all of these activities.

The Diocesan Trustees were seeking to appoint a qualified and highly motivated Finance Manager to support this important work. Reporting to the Financial Secretary, the Finance Manager manages the work of functions of the finance team to ensure the highest standards of fiscal responsibility, compliance with financial aspects of Charity Law, meet internal and external deadlines and manage the department staff to ensure accounting functions and procedures are completed. The role includes responsibility for the compilation and presentation of budgets and management accounts, together with the preparation of the statutory financial statements and the management of the annual audit as well as overseeing the banking arrangements and Gift Aid scheme.

The successful candidate was a qualified member of a recognised accountancy professional body and has suitable experience in managing a finance department. Recent knowledge of Charity accounting was preferable but not essential. The successful candidate had a range of advanced skills; in addition to technical ability they needed to be an excellent communicator with a high level of interpersonal skills. They needed to recognise the religious and charitable ethos of the organisation and, if appointed, demonstrate sensitivity towards working with members of the Catholic Church.

Travel around the diocese is necessary as part of this role. The successful post holder needed a driving licence and access to a vehicle for which essential user mileage will be paid. This post was subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check.

The Parish Council is a body of 14 people drawn from the Saturday Vigil Mass and the Sunday Masses. The role of the Parish Council is to assist, advise and co-operate with the Parish Priest on behalf of the wider parish community. The group also undertakes any work on behalf of the Parish Priest as required, e.g. Parish surveys.

The group met at 7:30pm on Wednesday 26th October 2016 and notes of the meetings can be made available to all members of the parish.

Families were warmly invited to the Annual Diocesan Mass celebrating the important vocation of Grandparents in the life of the family, and of the Church. Bishop Mark Davies was the main celebrant at the Mass, which was hosted by St Joseph’s, North Road, Birkenhead, CH42 7JU on Saturday the 1st of October at 11am followed by light refreshments. Please keep the vocation of grandparents in your prayers, they are often they are essential in assisting parents with childcare and passing on the beauty of the Catholic Faith to their grandchildren.

162.  Catholic Certificate Of Religious Studies: Saturday 10th September 2016

The CCRS study course is designed for people who are involved in communicating their Catholic faith, directly or indirectly. It is open to catechists, people involved in liturgical work, and other interested adults. The course is run through a series of modules, 8 days in total between September and June, at Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish Centre in Ellesmere Port.

We collected £ 194.82 for the Apostleship of the Sea.

Sea Sunday is when we have the opportunity to remember and pray for seafarers, their families and all who support them. On Sea Sunday Catholic Churches around the UK take up a second collection with all funds raised going to the Apostleship of the Sea to support their work. It is a day of remembrance, prayer and celebration, and an opportunity to think about and thank those seafarers who work tirelessly throughout the year bringing us goods we often take for granted.

The Ursuline Convent Chester closed 40 years ago this year. A reunion was organised for any girls who were at the school in its final years in the 1970s. The reunion was at the Blossoms Hotel in St John Street, Chester, on Saturday 25 June between 2.30pm and 5pm. Afternoon tea was served (cost £12.50). We are fortunate, as Shrewsbury Cathedral hosted the visit of the Relics of St Anthony of Padua for prayer and veneration on Friday 24th June from 11am until after Mass at 7:30pm. The Relics then continued its journey to St Chad’s Cathedral in Birmingham.

There was a day to help clergy and laity who encounter domestic abuse. 10am for 10.30am until 3.00pm at Our Lady’s, Shaw Heath, Stockport, SK3 8BQ Monday on Monday 13th June.

A third of women and a fifth of men experience domestic abuse. Nikki Dhillon-Keane, a counsellor from the Catholic Domestic Abuse Working Group addressed a) understanding the issue, b) appropriate responses and c) developing local resources. Cost was £20. The Bishops’ Conference established that, at all Sunday Masses on 11–12 June 2016, each parish prayed for Her Majesty the Queen to mark her 90th birthday by including such an intention in the Bidding Prayers and by reciting at the end of Mass (after the Prayer after Communion and before the Final Blessing) the Prayer for the Queen.

143.  World Communications Day: Ascension Sunday 8th May 2016

World Communications Sunday reflected Our Lord’s mandate that we “Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good news”. On this day, Catholics were encouraged to pray for all those professionals who work in the field of communications. A particular prayer intention is for those who communicate on behalf of the Catholic Church in this country through the Catholic Communications Network (CCN), the Communications Office of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. It supports the Bishops in their key national priorities in education; combating human trafficking, life issues, safeguarding, prisons, interfaith relations and vocations, to name but a few. CCN is responsible for developing the public profile of the Church in the press, radio and TV, digitally and across social media platforms. It is also a very helpful resource for national and international media professionals. Please help CCN to continue this work through contributing generously to the collection on the day.

"Aged 18 – 35? Then you were more than welcome to come along to a 'Day of Reflection' which had been organised by 'ACTS' ('Adult Catholics Together Spiritually') on Sat 30 April. The focus of the day was on Pope Francis' latest document, 'The Joy of Love' and was led by Barbara Davies."

A 'Day of Reflection' led by Fr Jonathan Brandon was organised by 'A.C.T.S’ ('Adult Catholics Together Spiritually'). Anyone aged between 18 – 35 was most welcome. Fr Jonathan lead us prayerfully through the day which was held at Wistaston Hall, Crewe, CW2 8JS.

The day started at approximately 9.30pm until approximately 5pm.

Diocese of Shrewsbury Job Recruitment

The Diocese of Shrewsbury was recruiting for two roles to join its Education Team, based at the Curial Office in Birkenhead.

Academies And Governance Manager

An experienced person was needed to support governors in Diocesan schools, able to advise governors and governing bodies on legal and procedural matters, on best practice in schools as well as managing the process of governor appointments. Support to Diocesan academies includes management of Diocesan responsibilities on conversion, liaise with academies on procedural and other matters as well as attending such meetings as required. This was a full time (35 hours) permanent position in the range of £10-£12 per hour depend on experience. Some understanding of Voluntary Aided schools is desirable.

Schools And Academies Finance Manager

This was a new role within the Curial Office Team to provide advice and support to schools and academies on budget planning; to advise on how financial difficulties may be avoided or resolved; to advise on issues raised during annual audits; provide training courses for multi-academy trusts, governors, headteachers and administrative staff; attend MAT and governing body meetings; advise and support Diocesan officers as appropriate. This was a permanent position for 21 hours per week with salary in the range of £12-£15 per hour dependent on experience.

121.  Jesus Christ: The Face of Father’s Mercy: 13th January - 6th February 2016

A series of four reflections on the Person and Work of Jesus as the ultimate revelation of the Mercy of God were held in January and February 2016. Open to everyone (particularly catechists); Each talk can stand alone, but attendance at all four was requested. The whole series was available at: Our Lady’s Parish Centre, Ellesmere Port, CH65 8BY on 13th January, 20th January, 27th January & 3rd February from 7.30pm – 9pm and at St Winefride’s Convent School, Shrewsbury SY1 1TE on Saturdays 16th January, 23rd January, 30th January & 6th February from 10.30am – 1pm. 113.  Parish Social Evening: Sunday 22nd November 2015

Our latest Parish Social Evening took place on Sunday 22 November 2015 at 6.30pm in the Parish Hall. There was good food ‘Pulpety’, good music and it was a good opportunity to meet others parishioners and have some fun together. Entrance was by ticket only. It was a very nice and warm evening which was enjoyed by all. There was a good atmosphere and we have had a good time together. We have brought £277.50 to our Parish account as the profit from this Social.

St Agnes, West Kirby, Justice & Peace Group arranged a study day on Saturday 21st November from 11 am to 3 pm on Laudato Si: the Imperative to Change. Ellen Teague, Tablet journalist and member of the Columbans' JPIC team, spoke on Laudato Si', and Paul Kelly, member of the Lancaster Diocese Faith and Justice Commission, spoke on climate change. No charge and a light lunch was included. Registration was essential for catering purposes.

111.  St Francis Parish Council: Monday 16th November 2015

The Parish Council is a body of 14 people drawn from the Saturday Vigil Mass and the three Sunday Masses, and includes representation from both the English and Polish communities. The role of the Parish Council is to assist, advise and co-operate with the Parish Priest on behalf of the wider parish community. The group also undertakes any work on behalf of the Parish Priest as required, e.g. Parish surveys.

The group met at 7:30pm on Monday 16th November 2015 and notes of the meetings are available to all members of the parish.

109.  St. Werburgh's Great War Study Group: 7th - 15th November 2015



In November 2014 St. Werburgh's Great War Study Group held an display showing what the town of Chester and the parish of St. Werburgh's was like in 1914, before the Great War started. The display showed how the war altered the parish and the toll it took of parishioners.

This display in the Church, was open Saturday 7th - Sunday 15th November 2015 between 1 - 4pm each day and had the emphasis on the effect of war on parish families. Biographies of 115 parishioners who fell in this war were in an interim Memorial Book in the Great War Memorial Chapel. The history of this unique chapel and copies of recently published book, “We Shall Remember Them” also available. All visitors were very welcome. Party bookings taken and could be 'tweaked' to fit particular interests.

106.  Concert in Aid of the Refugees: Friday 30th October 2015

In conjunction with the SVP, Our Lady of Lourdes and Sacred Heart Parish are hosting a Charity Concert on Friday 30th October 2015 at 7:00pm. This is to raise awareness and fundraise for all the families involved in the refugee crisis. There will be music, raffle prizes and a bar.

104.  Young Adults Weekend Retreat: Friday 23rd - Sunday 25th October 2015

A.C.T.S. ('ADULT CATHOLICS TOGETHER SPIRITUALLY') annual retreat took place this October and if you were aged between 18 – 35 you were welcome to join us. Mgr Paul Groghan, (until recently chaplain at Trinity University, Leeds) lead us prayerfully through the weekend. The retreat took place at Sandymount Retreat Centre, Blundellsands (four minutes from the sea!), near Liverpool. The cost was £120 but we asked for an anonymous donation so people give what they can! 102.  Talks on the Persecuted Church: Wednesday 14th October 2015

An Evening of Talks on the Persecuted Church Wednesday 14 October 2015 (7:30-9pm) at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral (L3 5TQ).

Aid to the Church in Need, the international Catholic charity working to support the Church wherever it is struggling or persecuted, organised this event in Liverpool.

Guest speakers included: Archbishop Jean-Clément Jeanbart, the Melkite Greek Catholic Bishop of Aleppo, Syria; Timothy Cho, a personal witness to persecution in North Korea;
and Neville Kyrke-Smith, National Director of ACN UK. All were welcome.

100.  Charity Concert: Friday 9th October 2015

Chifundo UK and Soroptimist International of Chester held a Charity Concert featuring A Handbag of Harmonies and The Queen’s School Chamber Choir. This was in aid of The SOKO Fund, an educational charity providing university scholarships for women in Malawi.

99.  Diocesan Vigil of Prayer for the Synod: Saturday 3rd October 2015

We were invited to join Bishop Mark in prayer at a Diocesan Vigil of Prayer for the Synod on 'The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and in the Contemporary World’ which (begins in Rome on the 4th of October).

Our Diocesan Vigil of prayer was on Saturday 3rd October at Shrewsbury Cathedral from 10am until 4pm and people were welcome to come for all, or just part of it. The Annual Mass in celebration of Grandparents formed part of the Vigil, and was celebrated at noon and be followed by refreshments.

97.  CAFOD Harvest Fast Day: Friday 2nd October 2015

Hamani lives in a remote village in Niger. Life is incredibly tough there. With longer and hotter dry seasons, it is becoming more and more difficult to grow crops. Just three years ago. Drought destroyed much of the harvest Hamani and his neighbours were dependent on. Your generosity provided Hamani’s community with enough basic food to keep them alive. But his community don’t want to rely on hand outs. They want to be self-sufficient. Your support this harvest will ensure millions of people around the world are able to grow enough food to eat. Signing up to “Hands On” in Niger you will be supporting an entire community of people in Niger with the tools and knowledge to not only survive the most extreme droughts but to flourish. See your Parish envelope for more on giving at Harvest Fast Day and how to take part in this life-changing opportunity.

This harvest, as we give thanks for the abundance God provides for us all, we also remember that our sisters and brothers in the world's poorest countries will not be able to feed themselves. 95.  The Ursuline Sisters Moved South: Sunday 27th September 2015

A Mass of Thanksgiving to celebrate the dedicated work of the Ursuline Sisters (before they moved south), was held at St Werburgh’s Church Chester on Sunday September 27th at 10.45 am. Mass  and was followed by a light lunch and get together at St Werburgh’s Parish Centre Chester. The Sisters moved from Crewe to Chester in 1925 to begin their work in education. More recently they have worked for Justice and Peace and supported their local communities in three houses in the North West, always faithful to their motto “Serviam”.
