About 10,000 Catholics were in Liverpool last weekend for three inspirational days which deepenedour understanding and relationship with the Eucharist and culminated in the Blessed Sacrament procession on Sunday. A very special thank you to all those who came into Liverpool for the procession and braved the downpours– the rain only seemed to enhance theatmosphere and singing! Adoremus is still available for all to experience with video keynotes and highlights at https://www.shalomworldtv.org/videos/index/2590 and sound files along with downloadable copies of the talks at http://catholicnews.org.uk/Home/Special-Events/Adoremus-National-Eucharistic-Pilgrimage

On Friday 15th June we launched a ‘NightFever’ programme in St Francis’ Church Chester. We started with Mass at 7pm. Adoration began at 8pm running through until 10:30pm. NightFever is a fairly new idea and requires a small team of willing volunteers to go out into busy town/city centres inviting passers-by to come into church to light a candle and experience Adoration. There is also the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of reconciliation.

NightFever is hugely successful across Europe and the USA. People were asked to come along to Mass and spend some time in prayer during adoration after. As has been the custom for many years now, people were invited you to send in the names and addresses of couples who were celebrating a significant wedding anniversary in 2018, together with an indication of which anniversary they were celebrating. Names and addresses were to be sent to Margaret Lightbound so that the couples received a personal invitation to the Mass.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                [Back to Index]

The cost of the Pilgrimage, which includes direct flights from Manchester, half‑board accommodation, all coaches and sightseeing was £1,575. Full details, booking forms and itineraries were available from the Holy Land Pilgrimages page on the Diocesan Website www.dioceseofshrewsbury.org.

This took place from the 22nd - 29th October and was based in Bethlehem and Galilee. We walked together in the footsteps of the Lord but there was the opportunity to meet with young Christians from the Holy Land in schools and universities and to discover from them what it is like to be a young Christian in Palestine today. Thanks to the generosity of various donors we were able to offer this Pilgrimage at £895. Booking forms and itineraries are available from the Holy Land Pilgrimages page on the Diocesan Website www.dioceseofshrewsbury.org. It was requested that we encourage young people from your parish between the age of 16 & 25 to join the Pilgrimage. There was also the opportunity to sponsor a young person who you felt would especially benefit from such an experience.

Mrs Louise Kirk of the Diocesan Marriage & Family Life Commission wrote her book Sexuality Explained: a guide for parents and children to help. She reviewed the current pitfalls of leaving sex education to teachers and outlined ways in which parents can do more for their children. 8pm on Tuesday, 24th October, at St Alban’s Church Hall, Macclesfield, SK11 8DJ.

Francis of Assisi is a saint whose appeal transcends denominational boundaries within Christianity, and indeed the boundaries between Christianity and other faiths. For over three centuries Franciscans have celebrated his 'Transitus', or passing from this life to the next, around sunset on the 3rd of October each year. The service combines Evening Prayer I for the Feast of St Francis with a reading of the account of Francis’s final days from the First Life by Brother Thomas of Celano.

The Chester community of Capuchin Franciscan friars and the Chester fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order invited all who wish to join with them and with local Anglican Franciscans in a celebration of the Transitus on October 3rd at 7 p.m. in St Anselm’s Chapel, Chester Cathedral.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                [Back to Index]

The Chester Across Group pilgrimage to Lourdes by Jumbulance took place from Thursday 31st August to Saturday 9th September. We traveled overland and the Jumbulance has seven beds on it so we could care for some very sick or disabled pilgrims, especially those who cannot fly.

There were vacancies for a Doctor and/or nurse; two helpers and two sick or disabled people. In accordance with the vision of Evangelii Gaudium, the successful candidate would develop the concept of ‘missionary parishes’ in the Diocese of Salford and provide opportunities for parishioners of every age to grow in their own faith and hand it on to others both, young and adult. Details were available from their website.

The Diocese also supports over 200 Catholic schools, provides pastoral support and chaplaincy provision for local hospitals, police and universities and works to protect, encourage and support diverse groups including the young and those most vulnerable in society. This is in addition to operating various other services including our diocesan bookshop and a network of parish centres and clubs. Our central services, based at the Cathedral Centre in Salford, work to support and assist all of these activities.

The Diocesan Trustees were seeking to appoint a qualified and highly motivated Finance Manager to support this important work. Reporting to the Financial Secretary, the Finance Manager manages the work of functions of the finance team to ensure the highest standards of fiscal responsibility, compliance with financial aspects of Charity Law, meet internal and external deadlines and manage the department staff to ensure accounting functions and procedures are completed. The role includes responsibility for the compilation and presentation of budgets and management accounts, together with the preparation of the statutory financial statements and the management of the annual audit as well as overseeing the banking arrangements and Gift Aid scheme.

The successful candidate was a qualified member of a recognised accountancy professional body and has suitable experience in managing a finance department. Recent knowledge of Charity accounting was preferable but not essential. The successful candidate had a range of advanced skills; in addition to technical ability they needed to be an excellent communicator with a high level of interpersonal skills. They needed to recognise the religious and charitable ethos of the organisation and, if appointed, demonstrate sensitivity towards working with members of the Catholic Church.

Travel around the diocese is necessary as part of this role. The successful post holder needed a driving licence and access to a vehicle for which essential user mileage will be paid. This post was subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check.

On Sea Sunday Catholic Churches around the UK take up a second collection with all funds raised going to the Apostleship of the Sea to support their work. It is a day of remembrance, prayer and celebration, and an opportunity to think about and thank those seafarers who work tirelessly throughout the year bringing us goods we often take for granted.

World Communications Sunday reflected Our Lord’s mandate that we “Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good news”. On this day, Catholics were encouraged to pray for all those professionals who work in the field of communications. A particular prayer intention is for those who communicate on behalf of the Catholic Church in this country through the Catholic Communications Network (CCN), the Communications Office of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. It supports the Bishops in their key national priorities in education; combating human trafficking, life issues, safeguarding, prisons, interfaith relations and vocations, to name but a few. CCN is responsible for developing the public profile of the Church in the press, radio and TV, digitally and across social media platforms. It is also a very helpful resource for national and international media professionals. Please help CCN to continue this work through contributing generously to the collection on the day.

To help raise funds to support him, a musical evening has been arranged for Friday 22nd April 22nd in St. Columba’s Hall. As he is the only young person from Chester who is attending the conference, we are keen to get the support of all the Chester parishes. Tickets were on sale after Easter. Life is incredibly tough there. With longer and hotter dry seasons, it is becoming more and more difficult to grow crops. Just three years ago. Drought destroyed much of the harvest Hamani and his neighbours were dependent on. Your generosity provided Hamani’s community with enough basic food to keep them alive. But his community don’t want to rely on hand outs. They want to be self-sufficient. Your support this harvest will ensure millions of people around the world are able to grow enough food to eat. Signing up to “Hands On” in Niger you will be supporting an entire community of people in Niger with the tools and knowledge to not only survive the most extreme droughts but to flourish. See your Parish envelope for more on giving at Harvest Fast Day and how to take part in this life-changing opportunity.

Your support this Harvest, will ensure millions of people around the world are able to grow enough food to eat.

91.  Home Mission Sunday: 20 September 2015

Supporting the work of evangelisation in England and Wales Home Mission Sunday is celebrated today and is themed: PROCLAIM God’s Mercy. On this day we were encouraged to pray for the work of evangelisation in England and Wales, remembering in our prayers especially those whom we know are distant from the life of faith. A second collection took place which funds the bishops’ national work of evangelisation and the development of this year's Proclaim ’15: Building Missionary Parishes initiative. The collection also ensured that the Catholic Faith Centre is resourced to respond to those who have questions about the Catholic Faith.

It is possible to donate online at: The Catholic News Donations

80.  Proclaim ’15: Saturday 11th July 2015

In 2015 a significant evangelisation initiative called Proclaim ’15 is being launched to support, inspire and encourage new expressions of parish evangelisation. A project of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, it is designed to affirm the good work that is already being done by the Catholic community, and to provide resources and events to profile and develop new expressions of Catholic joy and missionary outreach. A major highlight of what is being offered next year is the organisation of a National Catholic Evangelisation Conference on 11 July 2015.

Proclaim ’15 has a practical and ‘how to’ focus because while there is enthusiasm within the Catholic community to share confidently and joyfully our Faith, it can at times be hard to discern where to begin. This initiative aims to address that difficulty and is inspired by Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, in which he writes: “I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelisation marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” Accompanying this cover letter is a booklet summarising the content of Proclaim ’15, including an invitation to get involved so that together we can discover, and perhaps rediscover, ways of joyfully sharing our faith as missionary disciples.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster.

7:30pm Friday May 1st Binks Lecture Theatre, University of Chester
Paul Vallely CMG FRSA Inaugural Lecture as Visiting Professor
'Pope Francis and the Future of Catholic Social Thinking'

Pope Francis has issued some powerful condemnations of the operations of the contemporary global economy. He has called for “a poor Church, for the poor”. But do his trenchant criticisms merely reiterate the critique of “savage capitalism” developed by Catholic Social Teaching throughout the 20C or is he developing that teaching in new ways? Paul Vallely’s book “Untying the Knots” has received wide acclaim: ‘well above the nervous reverence of much papal biography’ (Mark Lawson).

Admission at the door was: £3.00, Students: £1.00 – Wine and Refreshments served.

          40.  Christmas Crib Appeal 2014

The majority of the families we support live in the more deprived areas of the Diocese. Increasingly we are finding the reality of “in work poverty” a significant factor in causing family stress and making it difficult for some families to cope. Family and young peoples’ work has centred on, debt, accessing Food Banks, poor housing conditions, long term unemployment, bereavement, family breakdown, parental and children’s mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, parenting, domestic violence, loneliness, poor self-esteem, children and young people identified as being “at risk” and sadly supporting children who have been abused. We provide a counselling service for adults and children and our post adoption service is currently accompanying 24 people tracing their origins.

            30.  First Sunday of Advent: Sunday 30th November 2014

Sunday 30th November 2014 was the First Sunday of Advent. Advent is a very special time to prepare ourselves for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. We can read in the CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH no 524: When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Saviour’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating the precursor's birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: "He must increase, but I must decrease."

The biographies of 80 fallen men have been placed in the interim Memorial Book, in the Great War Memorial Chapel, which, together with the church, has been decorated particularly for this event. The display was open each afternoon in November from 1.00-4.00pm.

11.  Francis the Holy Jester: Wednesday 1st October 2014

We had the opportunity to see this monologue performed by Mario Pirovano on the 1st October 2014 at 6.30 pm in our Church.

"Mario's performance was a rare treat, a real 'tour de force' and very informative too! St Francis was a really controversial figure, both during his lifetime and for centuries thereafter. But such a wise and good man, and our blessed Pope Francis now seems to be following in his footsteps! The performance was entertaining, informative and thought provoking." [A review from the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Littlehampton]

[A review from Wayne University in Detroit]

[Press reviews of 'Francis the Holy Jester' and performance by Mario Pirovano]

A masterpiece of wit, spiritual insight, and inspiration. The play was written and directed by Dario Fo, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1997. Mario is a great friend and collaborator of Dario Fo and has translated this one man play from Italian to English himself. The monologue is made with 4 episodes about the life of Saint Francis of Assisi; Francis meets the wolf of Gubbio, Francis and the Tirade of Bologna, Francis and Pope Innocent III, Francis death.

This is one of the comments after the previous Mario’s performance:
“Engaging his audience from beginning to end the charismatic Mario acted out episodes in the life of St Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan orders. The result was a deeply entertaining and informative theatrical experience. He managed to transport his audience back to medieval Italy and bring to life stories of Popes, peasants, saints and sinners. Without the use of costumes or theatrical props his performance was extremely energetic, utterly uplifting and genuinely thought provoking. His ability to switch between characters in each tale, using simple and subtle gestures and voice tone was remarkable.”

2.  Relics of St Anthony of Padua

example graphic

Hundreds of people from all around the Country visited St Francis Church on Thursday 31st October 2013 to view the relics of St Anthony of Padua. There was a mass at noon and 7pm with veneration from 1.00-6.30pm and 8.00-9.00pm.

Padua-based Greyfriar, Fr Mario Conte, editor of the Messenger of Saint Anthony magazine, will accompany the relics on the tour to mark the 750th anniversary of the discovery of St Anthony’s tongue by St Bonaventure.

St Anthony died in 1231 and was originally buried at Sancta Maria Mater Domini Church in Padua. His remains were later moved, in 1263, to the current basilica in the Italian city. When St Bonaventure, who was head of the Franciscan Order at the time, presided over the opening of Anthony’s coffin, he discovered that the saint’s vocal organs were still intact, including a red and soft tongue.

According to Fr Mario Conte, there is nothing superstitious about relics. He said: “The real meaning of a relic is love – they are a link of love between the person who venerates and the saint.”

Anthony of Padua was a Portuguese Catholic friar belonging to the Franciscan Order. He was born and raised in a wealthy family in Lisbon. Noted by his contemporaries for his forceful preaching and expert knowledge of scripture, he was the fastest canonised saint ever in the church’s history. He is patron of: Lost people or things; American Indians; animals; infertility; Brazil; the elderly; fishermen; harvests; horses; the oppressed and poor; Portugal; pregnant women; shipwrecks and travellers.
